Security planning
How to Plan Security for an Event
Start with the event’s attendance, schedule, venue layout, entrances, parking, and any specific concerns. A site walkthrough can help identify bottlenecks, poorly lit areas, and access points that need coverage. As a starting point, assign at least one officer to each active public entrance. Add staff for ticketing or screening, and consider a supervisor or roving officer for larger events or multiple activity areas. Keep emergency exits clear, and adjust staffing to the event’s size and risks. Plan how guests will move between parking, entrances, and event areas. Use signs and staff to reduce congestion, keep pedestrian routes clear, and coordinate vehicle direction with the venue. Consider event-specific concerns such as alcohol service, restricted areas, valuable property, outdoor conditions, VIP arrivals, or late-night departures. Brief staff on assignments, communication, emergency contacts, and what details to include in incident reports. A site assessment can help create a staffing plan suited to the venue and event.
